medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Victor is entered under today in the oldest surviving form of the (pseudo-)Hieronymian Martyrology as a martyr of the Via Salaria, where according to the the seventh-century _Itinerarium Salisburgense_ his tomb was situated. Prior to 2001 he followed St. Adrio of Alexandria in a single entry in the Roman Martyrology, as he does also in many texts of the (ps.-)HM, and was thus presented as a martyr of Alexandria. Joining them in that entry was one Basilla (vel sim.), now thought to be a garble in the (ps.-)HM for the name of the cemetery where Victor was laid to rest. The current Roman Martyrology gives him an entry of his own and locates him in the cemetery of Basilla.
Best,
John Dillon
