OPERA PRODUCTIONS PHOTOGRAPHS PROJECT

Pay: £10.54 per hour, casual PAYE engagement
Location: Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London
The Royal Opera House is the major lyric arts theatre in the United Kingdom, enjoying an international reputation for excellence. The ROH Collections collects, preserves and makes available archives and objects covering the history of the three theatres that have stood on the site since 1732.
The Opera Production Folders are one of the most heavily used collections in the ROH Collections. This collection is a documentary record of performances of opera at the Royal Opera House. It contains b&w and colour photographs, colour transparencies, documents and other material relating to the operas performed at the theatre. The folders are a vital record of performances and singers, document the evolution of set and costume design, and the development of theatre photography.
The ROH Collections are looking to recruit casual staff to assist with a project to integrate, rehouse, and identify archives relating to opera performances. The project with involve:
• Integrating new photographs and material into the collection
• Rehousing individual photographs and material into archive folders and boxes
• Researching performance information
• Labelling boxes and folders for correct identification
Suitable candidates should:
• Be able to work flexible hours; up to 2-3 days week as required. Days of the week to be agreed
• Be able to complete tasks to a high level of accuracy and have good attention to detail
• Be able to follow instructions and procedures
• Be able to handle photographic and paper archives with care
• Be self-motivated, have good focus and concentration in order to complete a repetitive task
• Be confident working independently and as part of the wider ROH Collections team
• Have good communication and IT skills
• An interest in opera, ballet and theatre will be an advantage, but is not essential
