dear david and several members of the list who asked me to send the piece i had mentioned, hereby attached.
to provide the context of it, this was written for an international encyclopedia of communication theory and philosophy, not addressed to designers.
the editor had read my semantic turn and wanted the entry on design to address of artifacts of communication within a rather limited word count.
i mentioned the piece in my response to lily diaz-kommonen who referred to my chapter on the ecology of artifacts. the attached piece, while extremely short, builds on my earlier account of ecology that designers fuel, inviting designers to take a larger responsibility for what they contribute.
the attached piece overcomes two extreme positions:
* the top-down traditional designers' conception of expert driven design (as if individuals designed chairs, automobiles, apps, and courses of action de novo) and
* the bottom-up conception represented by matt ridley's "evolution of everything," which takes an anti-elitist-design position (as if innovations emerge spontaneously in human action). e.g. https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?p=matt+ridley+youtube&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-003
my conception of design has always been interactive, driven by the production of artifacts, and the meanings that different discourse communities develop while diversely engaging with and connecting artifacts into larger ecologies that all of us should make an effort to understand as participants.

Hi Klaus
It sounds as though your email would be of interest to the list. If you can output your email for example as a PDF file it is possible to send to the list as an attachment. The list is set to take a wide range of attachments including MSWord, DocX, RTF, PDF and a number of image formats. Please note everyone.
Kind regards
David
