The 2016 ASW will take place at the very comfortable Chancellors Hotel – part of Manchester University’s conference accommodation. The circular conference room, comfortable bedrooms, light and airy dining areas and lawned garden will provide welcoming hospitality for our conference.
The ASW will follow the now standard format with the core programme running from Friday afternoon to Sunday lunchtime. All the usual features of the ASW will be on offer – a variety of presentations, News and Update sessions, library visits, Quick-Fire sessions and a panel-led discussion - this year focussing on marketing and demonstrating value. There will be opportunities to visit the Royal Northern College of Music and the Henry Watson Music Library as part of the core programme.

Archives and Outreach, Heather Roberts, Royal Northern College of Music Archivist (Using case studies to show organisations have used RNCM’s unique heritage and archives to reach new audiences or to generate added value for their communities. Heather has worked with community projects, business anniversary projects, oral history projects and specialist repositories. There will be opportunities for questions)
10:00 Manchester 1916, or What did you play in the war, Daddy?, Geoff Thomason, Deputy Librarian, Royal Northern College of Music (As commemorations of the First World War continue Geoff will bring an overview of music-making in Manchester during the Great War focussing on the repertoire shifts prompted by the conflict)

11:15 Panel: Effective library marketing strategies and methods of demonstrating value, Neil MacInnes, Strategic Lead, Manchester Libraries and Penny Hicks, Head of Strategic Marketing and Communications, University of Manchester (This topic was suggested in feedback from the 2015 ASW and will be very relevant to all sectors as library services are required to demonstrate value and market services to attract wider audiences. There will be time for discussion and questions)
12:00 Irish Traditional Music Archive: Access and Innovation, Grace Toland, Director Designate/Librarian - Irish Traditional Music Archive (Grace will speak about her experience of marketing library services drawing on the developments at ITMA and her advocacy of these collections)
12:30 2016 IAML(UK&Irl) Excellence Awards (15 minutes)
14:00 IAML(UK&Irl) AGM and E.T.Bryant and Oldman prizes
15:00 Tour of the newly refurbished Henry Watson Music Library, Ros Edwards, Service Development Co-ordinator (Music) (Described as “bigger and better than ever before” the library has one of the largest collections of printed music and books on music in the country as well as a world-renowned research collection of manuscripts and early printed music. New developments include a DJ and mixing desk, musical instruments available to play, composition software, and online reference and music streaming facilities)

18:00 Richter-Loeb Archive at the Halle, Eleanor Roberts, Deputy Director of Development/Archivist, Hallé Concerts Society (Eleanor will explore the Halle Archive’s newest collection, the Richter-Loeb Archive, much of which relates to the career of Hans Richter who conducted the iconic Hallé Orchestra from 1899-1911)

12:15 Get It Loud In Libraries: Update, Stuart Parsons, Lancashire Libraries (Get It Loud in Libraries has attracted more than 28,000 people into public libraries over the last 9 years through its mix of promoting and showcasing new music acts; by holding live gigs in libraries; and giving young people in the local community an opportunity to develop their performance and digital production skills by producing films, studying rock journalism, broadcasting, photography and events management. New Arts Council funding will enable GILL to expand even further)
