Based on many years of experience in publishing, I believe that the proposal of a scholar-owned version of Academia is unlikely.

We, i.e the Society for Artistic Research (SAR) and its associated Journal for Artistic Research (JAR), have created just such a platform: the Research Catalogue (RC).
The RC is an online, multi-media, Open Access and open source database for (artistic) research and at the same time a publication platform and a collaborative workspace. It is used as a backbone of peer reviewed journals (such as JAR), as institutional repository and research management system, as project space, and as personal profile (web)page. It offers not only the possibility to upload pdf’s, but to create what we call research ’expositions’, rich-media webpages, where text, image, audio and video can be woven together in order to make a claim.
Created between 2010 and 2012 (funded by a Dutch finding agency) the RC is financially supported by several Higher Education Institutes, and - based on feedback we receive - the platform is in constant development. The number of accounts is growing fast steadily (app. 7000 at the moment).
RC is hosted at KTH Stockholm. The support team operates from Berlin. The software development takes place in Karlsruhe. The non-for-profit organization SAR is based in Bern, Switzerland.
