It's a myth that, for example, a .com will always rank higher than a .net.
The reason this myth exists is that everyone would always prefer a .com. If
they own the .net or .org it's almost certainly because the .com has been
taken.
If the .com has been taken then it will be older and "probably" have some
links/ authority. This makes it much harder to rank for other domains.
The reality is that the domain with the best link profile, authority,
relevant content will rank more highly - irrespective of whether it is the
.com
Geo domains are a different story. anything .uk will normally rank better
in google.co.uk (although this is more prevalent in other country domains
.de .fr etc where there is a limit on who can own these country domains).
Personally I would always go for the .com. If you have to pay for it then
so be it OR come up with something close to what you want. In terms of
value, the .com is infinitely more valuable than others.
I've even started up businesses and changed business names on the back of
being able to secure the .com - how ridiculous is that!!!
As for the .org.uk .org - I know that for entities like charities etc
the org part is actually the chosen domain. The problem is that these
domains are not limited to just "org entities". 99% of the .org/ .org.uk
domains are owned by people that don't have access to the .com or .co.uk -
I know as I have a number of them myself.
So .org/ .org.uk became the poor mans domain name - wrongly, but that's the
way they were released in to the wild.
