I think there’s a wider issue at stake.
Given that brandname.com is 'protected' by brandname’s right to trade as brandname and various legislation regarding passing off and copyright etc, and the .org.uk and .co.uk domains are open (with the caveat that the intention for use is not-for-profit & commercial respectively) a brandname is likely to register and park as many tld’s as they can afford on the basis that despite the desire of nominet the *general* public sees no real difference between brandname.com; brandname.org.uk and brandname.co.uk (other than they might assume that the .uk variants mean that brandname is UK based)
on that basis brandname.pictures is as useful as pictures.brandname.com
but brandname.com/pictures is probably easier for the average user to understand.
