Applications are open for a tenure track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor for Fall 2016.
The School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA welcomes applications for a tenure track position in Design, with a focus on design for service at the assistant or associate rank for fall 2016.
CMU’s School of Design, noted for its transdisciplinary approach to design education, is one of the oldest and most respected programs in the country. In fall of 2014, launched new programs and curricula at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
The School of Design’s new programs identify three areas of design focus: design for service, design for social innovation and transition design. These three areas of established, developing and emergent design practices supplement the subdisciplinary tracks of product design, communication design and environments (design for digital and physical environments) and serve as contexts for courses, projects, and research.
Design for Service
Design for service is the human-centered practice of designing for complexity, for an ecosystem of experiences, and represents a fundamental shift in business models and the economy. Increasingly, our experiences are mediated through a variety of digital and physical interfaces and environments over time, as users and customers move through the service experience and interact with a variety of service providers. At the School of Design, we are especially interested in candidates who have demonstrated deep knowledge and skill in service design creation, and who illustrate evolutionary thinking on the future of service design and how it can support new service platforms, social innovations, sustainable practices, and social transition.
Qualifications
It is an exciting time for the School of Design and we are looking for tenure and/or teaching track faculty to help us realize our vision for the next decade. We are especially interested in faculty at the entry-level, assistant professor rank.
Successful applicants will teach across levels of the undergraduate and masters programs, frequently team teach with colleagues from complementary disciplines, and serve as thesis advisors to masters students.
The School invites applicants with the following qualifications:
1. A design degree or equivalent professional experience, including expertise in design for service. Applicants should have experience with design for service methods and toolsets in theory and in practice, and will also bring their own unique viewpoint to bear on the future of design for service. A candidate's body of experience should involve service design projects, whether in the corporate or public/non-profit worlds, as distinct from the design of digital or physical products.
2. University level teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels or equivalent professional experience:
We are especially interested in candidates who are eager and qualified to teach at all levels of the curriculum in our bachelors, masters and doctoral programs.
3. Additional expertise in one or more of the following areas:
The School’s overarching theme is ‘Design for Interactions’ and refers to the focus on the quality of interactions between people, the built (designed) world and the environment (natural world). Student projects and research are situated in three areas of design focus, including, Design for Service, Design for Social Innovation and Transition Design. See more about the program framework <http://design.cmu.edu/content/program-framework> on our website.
We are looking for applicants with additional expertise in some of the following areas to help us evolve our curricula:
• Business design and modeling
• Design for social innovation & community-based design initiatives
• Design for sustainability/eco-design
• Design for multiple touchpoints and servicescapes (in digital, physical and multi-modal realms)
• Design research
• Instructional design & learning experience design
• Design for communication, products, & environments
Application Requirements
Interested individuals should include the following in their application package:
• Letter of application that includes:
1. Statement of why you are interested in this position and how you see yourself fitting into the program (this could include a description of projects, courses or initiatives you would like to develop in the future),
2. Overview of your teaching and research philosophy,
3. Statement about your approach to service design, where you think the sub-discipline is headed and how you see its relationship to social innovation and transition design
• Current CV
• 8-10 visual examples and descriptions of student work as evidence of your teaching experience, if applicable
• 2-3 examples of, or links to, course syllabi
• Portfolio that includes 8-10 visual examples and descriptions of personal work, professional work, and/or research (a digital link to a website with these materials is preferred). For service design projects, case studies that show the problem, approach, solution and deliverables are especially useful
• 2-3 examples of, or links to, published work/research or research proposals
• 3 professional references – please include name, title, phone number, address and email
Rank and tenure are negotiable and all positions include a comprehensive benefits package. Applicants should state their current and expected salary in the application.

The School of Design
Our student body is approximately 250 students, and is situated within the College of Fine Arts, along with the Schools of Architecture, Art, Drama and Music. CMU is one of only a few research universities with a top ranked design program and as such, offers a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities. More information on the School of Design can be found on the school’s website at: www.design.cmu.edu <http://www.design.cmu.edu/>.
Our New Programs
The School offers a bachelors degree (BDes) in Design for Interactions that has a flexible undergraduate curriculum with tracks in Communication Design, Product Design and a new track—Environments—that requires designers to have a deep understanding of dynamic spatial relationships at multiple levels of scale in both physical and digital environments. The new BDes curriculum enables students to specialize in one track, or customize an interdisciplinary course of study across two of the three tracks.
At the graduate level we offer a two-year Master of Design degree (MDes) that culminates in a year-long thesis project, and a one year Master of Professional Studies degree (MPS), for people with a design degree or equivalent experience. We also offer a one-year Master of Arts degree (MA) for students with no previous design experience.
The School of Design was one of the first programs in North America to offer degrees in design at the doctoral level. In addition to our full time PhD in design, we offer a new, professional doctorate (DDes) for professionals who wish to redirect or deepen their practice while still continuing with full or part time employment. For more on our programs, please visit our website: http://design.cmu.edu/ <http://design.cmu.edu/>
Our Ethos
The School takes a transdisciplinary approach to design education and its position within a premier research university provides faculty with an unparalleled opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from diverse disciplines. Faculty at the School of Design believe in teaching through making, are passionate about teaching and interact with students at all levels in our program. We have a highly collaborative culture and faculty frequently ‘team teach’ with colleagues with complementary expertise. We are actively engaged in a conversation about the future and the role that design/designers can play.
Research
In addition to teaching, tenure-track faculty (as well as doctoral students) are engaged in research that advances professional practice. Research within the College of Fine Arts is defined as activities that lead to the production of new knowledge; to increased problem-solving capabilities including design and analysis; to original critical or historical theory and interpretations; or the production of innovative professional work (practice-based research). Tenure-track faculty are expected to undertake research and regularly publish as partial fulfillment of tenure requirements.
