Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture invites applications for four (4)
doctoral candidate positions:
1. DOCTORAL CANDIDATE, Urban Planning and Design
The position begins in November 2015 or as agreed. The assignment is maximum of four years.
The position is available at the Department of Architecture. Urban Planning and Design research group has been studying e.g. the distribution of work in public and semi-public spaces of the city. The group has also done research on communication and participation in planning, governance and strategies of cities and the relevant professions, and the impacts of ICT to urban spaces.
Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate
Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their Doctor of Science (architecture) degree in four years, during which they should complete their thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects and teach relevant courses.
The doctoral candidate would participate in both theoretical and empirical work in the ongoing projects, by doing interviews in one of the urban regions, as well as in the preparation of new research proposals.

• A Masters level degree in architecture, landscape architecture or another relevant field

2. DOCTORAL CANDIDATE, Fashion/Textile Futures research
The position begins in November 2015 or as agreed. The assignment is maximum of four years.
The position is available at the Department of Design. Fashion/Textile Futures research group is looking for a doctoral candidate to develop a human-centered approach in constructive design research, especially in the fashion, clothing or textile field. The job offers a challenging entry into an international and productive research group with a chance to become versatile in human-centered constructive or practice-based design research. There is a strong research focus on sustainable fashion and textiles in the group, but also material-based research, aesthetic and creativity studies, practice-based research, strategic fashion and textile management are presented in group members’ research activities.
Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate
Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their DA in four years, during which they should complete their DA thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects and write journal articles around their topic area and teach relevant courses.
The candidate’s tasks also include developing design methods for human centered fashion, clothing or textile design and creating fashion, clothing or textile prototypes as a part of the data. The candidate will also participate in research group activities and project meetings as well as reporting and documenting.

3. DOCTORAL CANDIDATE, Digital Archives and Open Culture
The position begins in November 2015 or as agreed. The assignment is maximum of four years.
The position is available at the Department of Media.
The candidate will be located in the ARKI or in the Systems of Representation group or both. The candidate would seek to strengthen already existing strategies towards open culture being developed in the Aalto Media Lab. The candidate would be knowledgeable and experienced with archival media and develop his or her doctoral studies towards the area of digital online archives. The thesis itself would deal with pertinent questions regarding the issues of representation and interpretation of heritage materials. The candidate could focus on developing strategies for remediation of newly accessible historical media such as, for example, storytelling and performance.

Biofilia – Base for Biological Arts, a biological art unit was launched under the Aalto ARTS in 2012 (http://biofilia.aalto.fi/en/). It offers a platform and infrastructure for trans-disciplinary research and education that aim at creating cultural discussion and innovation around the topics related to the manipulation of life and biological processes at a practical and theoretical level, including philosophical and ethical dimensions.
Aalto Biofilia has a fully-equipped biological lab which offers unparallelled research capacity for the growing field of biological art. Biofilia initiates research projects both in the laboratory and natural environments exploring the interfaces between biosciences and art.
Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate
Full time doctoral candidates are expected to complete their DA in four years, during which they should complete their DA thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects and write journal articles around their topic area and teach relevant courses.
In addition, the tasks of the candidate include
• Distribution of knowledge about artist practice within life sciences, Biofilia, and synthetic biology and/or microfluidics to a wider audience (within Aalto and in larger public) by participating in writing journal articles and conference papers, and/or in the form of public exhibitions, symposiums, or the production of documentaries and online archives.
• Advising students and research/educational personnel in practices and laboratory work pertaining to bioart, synthetic biology and/or microfluidics
• Collaboration with colleagues, in terms of coordinating and streamlining all of the tasks above
Key selection criteria
The group is looking for a doctoral candidate with demonstrated solid and thorough personal cross-over practice in art/synthetic biology/microfluidics.
