dear friends of design,
this is a totally unexpected and terrible loss for the design community. i met mp ranjan years ago by sharing the floor with him on an idsa panel in denver on product semantics and was in contact with him ever since. just last year i joined him at the "design for a billion" conference in ahmedabad, india where we discussed approaches to design in view of the indian governmental initiatives to shift design from serving the wealthy to include the majority of indians living in villages and the urban poor. he had the bold idea of recommending the government of india to appoint a minister of design. surely a pipe dream but one born out of a vision for design to play the role it deserves in the indian culture and economy.
having invested so much in teaching, research, and key publications on handcraft in india, the ahmedabad conference addressed what we deeply shared. mp was warm, insightful, resourceful, and enthusiastic about human-centered design. his contributions are numerous and i hope his vision is picked up and continued.
i shall miss conversing with him about so many things, including about the hochschule fuer gestaltung in ulm whose design philosophy he embraced. the absence of his voice is heartfelt by very many.
my condolences go also to his wife aditi, who i was unable to meet in ahmedabad. she and mp coauthored the phenomenal work on indian handcraft and undoubtedly had a great influence on mp's thinking. losing him must be hard but is also a call to continue their joint mission to transform design to a human-centered effort and thereby make its products of benefit to ordinary people.
with sadness
