This is a very interesti9g query, and lies at the heart of what the professional librarian is all about, their knowledge and experience of recognising sources, managing the flow of information etc.
I spent some time a as student in the old Commercial library at Birmingham, some 50 plus years ago, their knowledge and expertise was amazing., we must not lose the librarians role, professionalism and energy in these terrible times for the profession and for public libraries.
Not everyone has access to the internet, or the ability to 'research' matters!

Subject: Reference Services
Hello
Several years ago our reference team went 'virtual' and no longer had a staff presence in our branches. All reference enquiries are dealt with by phone, email or live chat.
In a continuing review of our service, we would like to know -
How many services retain a specialist reference enquiry team?
If you don't, how to you handle reference enquiries?
Do you think it has affected your ability to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service?
Who evaluates/selects your online resources - Your IT/digital team, stock manager, development team etc?
All comments/ thoughts will be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Linda
