this is an explanation of the journals Science and PNAS that those of you
not in the sciences may require.

There are several very special journals in the sciences, so they require
special discussion. I'll speak of two American Journals: PNAS and science.
These are journals of societies that cover all of science. (In Britain,
for example, there are the various publications of the Royal Society).
PNAS is Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which has 2,200
members from all of science. It is an elective process: you are not allowed
to apply and in fact, it is supposed to be a secret that you have been
nominated. Universities brag about how many members they have. The
National Academies have three components: Science, Engineering, and
Medicine. (Disclaimer, I'm a member of NAE (Engineering). There is a fourth
component, the National Research Council, but it is the branch that does
all the National Academy's studies and people do not get elected to it.
They do have committees, but that is different.
So, PNAS covers all the disciplines represented by the society, which is
all of science. Why does biology have such a large number of the
publications: because Biology has a huge membership. has the largest
membership of any discipline.
Science is the magazine of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science. It too covers all of science. Anyone can join, but only the select
get to be Fellow. Again, biology is perhaps the largest component.
In other words, these two journals and their societies do represent aol of
science.

I hope this explains Filippo's statement that these journals "generalizes
without evidence in its headline to cover all of science.
"
They don't need a headline. Those who know their organizations fully
understand. By the way, these are two of the world's
most prestigious journals to publish in.
