medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks. You're absolutely right -- as I see now when I read the legend's identifying inscription rather than just passively accepting the identification provided by the Svetlana Tomekovic Database of Byzantine Art. The latter, a subset of Princeton's Index of Christian Art, has numerous errors of this nature (it seems to have been catalogued by people whose facility in reading Greek was uneven). Knowing that -- and having already wondered about the iconography of this image as applied to Barnabas--, I should have been more careful.
