Hi
We issue all of our AV through self service.
We have dates of birth for all juniors and our LMS triggers a message if a child tries to issue an age inappropriate item to their ticket, referring them to staff.
The tag reading is accurate and we keep our AV in locked boxes, which have to be opened before leaving the building. Think it would be difficult to go forward with this without you obtaining junior DOBs at least for your LMS.
Kind regards
Linda

Ewan, we have dates of birth for the bulk of our borrowers and certainly for young people and children. So, we have set an alert on he LMS which is triggered when a child tries to self issue an adult title. The alert asks them to contact a member of staff.
Having said that, due to the high error rate we don't use RFID for AV items - I think about 2 in every 10 weren't read by the scanner.

Subject: Age Related Products and Self Issue
Hello,
This is my first contribution to your list, although I have been following your conversations for a while. I have been asked to investigate the possibility of issuing age restricted products (i.e. 15+ and 18+ DVDs) through self issue machines in our service points and wondered if anyone on the list would be able to help.
For background, we have a large collection of DVDs and have been issuing U and PG titles through self-issue for the last 6-9 months. This was initially brought in as a trial to see how things would go, and with one eye on extending the trial to the adult collection. However, there are some issues that we first need to tackle. The main issue is what we do about Challenge 25 legislation and ensuring that the person who borrows the item is of an age for the item. As a service, we do not seek identification that provides a D.O.B so we cannot use the LMS information as a yardstick for issue. We also need to consider aspects of Trading Standards legislation, such as refusal registers, before we can consider the possibility of self issue for these items.
My question is, does anyone here have experience of issuing age related products by self issue? If so, how did you go about tackling the minefield that is the legislation!
Thanks!
Ewan
