medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
In the midst of all the talk about Pope Francis and his encyclical, and his visit to the Shroud of Turin, I noticed that in his visit to a Waldensian church in Turin, Francis asked for forgiveness for “the non-Christian attitudes and behaviour” of the Catholic Church against Waldensians.

The thought came to me, as unlikely as it may be at first: did any medieval popes ever say they (or their Church) was sorry for anything they had ever done, recently or in the distant past?
Thanks for any information or insights you may have!
Best wishes to you from a sunny Galway,
George
