Hi Mark
As these tests are not always performed on a daily basis it is difficult to enforce QC every 24 hours but we try to! Many of our wards have designated staff who go around each day preparing all POCT equipment for use i.e. ensuring QC is performed on equipment in use on a daily basis. My team then perform ward audits regularly to check that log books are being filled in correctly and we try and link this up with patient notes to see when ketones have been performed and if a QC was performed on the meter that day. If not we generate a ward non-conformance against CPA standards and send an audit report to the ward manager who needs to respond with their actions before the non-conformance can be closed.
We are trying to replace as much of our equipment with touchscreen tech which has a QC lockout function when the tests are not performed within a reference period usually 24 hours. Swapping all meters for these types of devices is expensive and sometimes not justified on the level of use in certain areas. That is where our audit programme is essential. It's not perfect but shows we are doing all we can to promote safe care.
Clinical educators and link trainers need to do their part also, so its not just a one way street.

Subject: Abbott Ketone meters
Our Ketone meters are prepared for use in Medical Engineering mon-sat, but not Sundays nor B/H's. It used to be done on the wards where the meters were placed, but as they didn't comply, it was centralised. I have asked Abbott for their minimum QC'ing requirement guidance and any stability info, but they havn't yet been specific enough for me. Could anyone with same/similar meters please let me know what their QC'ing etc arrangements are?
