Hi Mark,
We use the Abbott Freestyle Optium H meters for ketone testing. Do you use the electronic devices? If you use the same as us, we have had similar problems with staff and QC! There is not a huge amount we can do about the situation except remind our link nurses about complying with protocols, providing information posters, ensuring people understand during training sessions and regular audits to highlight serious problems concerning IQC. Abbott was also vague about QC. We tell staff they must QC with both levels of QC BEFORE attempting a patient test, and then every 24 hours after that (if that makes sense?). We try and get staff to check the log book from the start to see if QCing is necessary.
Kind Regards,
Shaneela

Subject: Abbott Ketone meters
Our Ketone meters are prepared for use in Medical Engineering mon-sat, but not Sundays nor B/H's. It used to be done on the wards where the meters were placed, but as they didn't comply, it was centralised. I have asked Abbott for their minimum QC'ing requirement guidance and any stability info, but they havn't yet been specific enough for me. Could anyone with same/similar meters please let me know what their QC'ing etc arrangements are?
