Dear list members,
Respect is the care you put in not inflicting damage upon others.
However, don't forget that we consciously decided to put ourselves in this spot.
And in this spot there is conflict, or else it would be called "PhD Comfy Chair" instead of "Research".
This list has taught me a lot, and not only regarding design and research.
It has taught me that if you don't speak, nobody will hear you: if you have something to say, just say it.
It has taught me that the greatest minds in our field are also great in other ways, namely generosity, and (most of the time) will give your arguments the attention they deserve and will always answer you.
It has taught me that I can be obnoxious without even noticing it. So now I try to connect with people instead of just pushing back.
Those who participate in these exchanges can be sure to fall prey to the misunderstandings inherent to such an expressionless and asynchronous means of communication.
Those who don't, well... won't. So, by all means, express your views.
Just don't expect everyone else to agree with you or to pat your back.
Do expect to learn from debate and from disagreement.
That said, I must add that I agree with 90% of what Filippo Salustri has expressed. I find him to be absolutely right in regards to "type 3": that unfortunate fellow should have been shown the exit a long time ago.
The remaining 10% of disagreement is because in his episode with Ernst Ede, Filippo got acceptance instead of rejection. There are times when I feel there is some amount of patronizing towards people who don't have an email signature laden with acronyms. But in the end, when I feel that happening to me, I just say to myself: "suck it up and work harder" — the lesson here being 1) you're here to learn; 2) you can't expect people to read your mind or know things you didn't say.
Anyway, a bit of common sense, sense of humour, and empathy goes a long way.
Sometimes we forget to lighten up.
Best wishes to all,
