Hi,
I've stepped over many of the emails that come through this distribution list, and after this one, I must speak up.
I'm a relatively new subscriber and research student who feels privileged to be part of this community. Many times throughout the past year, I have been disappointed and disheartened by some of the bullying that I have witnessed here. I acknowledge that I am young with little experience and much to learn, so I'll borrow Otis Redding's words about his song 'Respect' to express my thoughts:
"That's one of my favorite songs because it has a better groove than any of my records. It says something, too: 'What you want, baby, you got it; what you need, baby, you got it; all I'm asking for is a little respect when I come home.' The song lines are great. The band track is beautiful. It took me a whole day to write it and about twenty minutes to arrange it. We cut it once and that was it. Everybody wants respect, you know." In many ways this distribution list is a home for the design research community. We are all leaders in some capacity that have succeeded in some way, to get what we wanted and what we needed to be here. David's email is a refreshing reminder that we can celebrate this by being better humans, myself included.
I look forward to reading future posts.
Humbly,
Amy

Dear Colleagues,
I am so glad to see David's post on this and second Teena's comment - over the past year I have been also approached by a number of colleagues (junior and senior) that left the list or heavily considered to for very similar reasons.
Kindness and respect always go way further, and the good news is that while not impacting the robustness of one's debate, they equip all involved parties with the opportunity to create and nurture a solid, healthy community worth being part of.
Thanks,
Daria

Well said David. Generosity of spirit and conceptual openness, as well as respect, is needed.
I was speaking to a PhD student and colleague only yesterday, who said she would never dare post on this list for fear of being ‘shot down’.
cheers, teena

For example, one subscriber — well known for expressing alternative views — received treatment that led to him withdrawing. Another subscriber made personal attacks on others. Such criticism has no place here. But the issues go beyond these few explicit events.
