medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
So far as finds of badges in England are concerned you should consult the following (and also their bibliographies for further literature)@
Brian Spencer "Pilgrimage Souvenirs and Secular Badges", Boydell Press in association with Museum of London, 2010 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London:7). (First published, HMSO, 1988).
The most complete source for badges found in England.
Spencer also did the catalogue of the Salisbury Museum collection:
Spencer, Brian. Salisbury Museum Medieval Catalogue Part w: Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Mueeum, 1990.
He also edited the Norfolk Museums catalogue:
Medieval Pilgrimage Badges from Norfolk, Norfolk Museums Service, 1980.

Does anyone have recommendations for good articles or books on pilgrim badges? I'm especially interested in their evolution.
Also, there is a detail in a picture--by Hinrik Bornemann my slide says--of a bearded man wearing a brimmed, black hat to which are pinned several pilgrim badges, but I have no title for the painting. I have dim memories that he is an anachronistic detail in a crucifixion scene, but I wouldn't bet on it. Does this ring any bells?
Thanks,
John
