Dear All,
An off-list note asked me where people can learn more about the philosophers and thinkers I named. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a good place to begin.
The is a high-quality reference work. It is well edited and well written. Each article contains both a bibliography of primary sources for the thinking of the philosopher or issue under discussion, and a bibliography of secondary sources quoted or cited in the article. Many articles also contain links to carefully curated web resources — for example, Mitchell Aboulafia’s excellent article on George Herbert Mead includes useful links. One link is to the Mead Project — a massive compilation of material by and about Mead, much of it in the form of full articles available by open access. Another link is the Pragmatism Cybrary, a rich collection of information and bibliographies, though not so much available in full text open access.
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is available at URL:
http://plato.stanford.edu/index.html
The encyclopedia contains major entries on Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Dilthey, George Herbert Mead, John Dewey, Martin Heidegger, Jurgen Habermas, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Paul Riceour. There are also important topical articles on hermeneutics and pragmatism, though not on symbolic interactionism.
Because most articles are deeper and more extensive than the articles in a general encyclopedia, this is a serious research tool on which one can draw for research projects, articles, and papers.
For those who want to go deeper into the original works of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, Mead, Dewey, Heideggger, Habermas, Gadamer, and Riceour, Amazon offers used books by all of them. These are often available at astonishing prices — in some cases, less than a dollar or less than a pound.
Warm wishes,
Ken
