medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
January 20th is the feast of the Roman martyr Sebastian, c300.
According to his 5th C. Acts, Sebastian enlisted in Rome c.283 and
sustained the martyrs Mark and Marcellinus in prison. The emperor
appointed him to the praetorian guard, unaware of his Christian faith.
After he sustained other Christians in prison he was accused by
Diocletian of ingratitude
and ordered to be shot with arrows. He legend tells of his recovery
after which he confronted the emperor and accused him cruelty and was
beaten to death with clubs.
