medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
Given the huge importance not only of the plague and the Black Death in medieval religious culture but also that of leprosy, I thought I’d signal a recent article by Monica H. Green, Kathleen Walker-Meikle, and Wolfgang P. Müller that helps demonstrate that an image commonly identified as representing the plague in fact represents leprosy.
The image in question — from London, British Library, MS Royal 6 E VI, vol. 2, f. 301ra — is here:

The relevant article by Green, Walker-Meikle and Müller — ‘Diagnosis of a “plague” image: A digital cautionary tale’ — can easily be found at the bottom of the page that is linked here, and it can be downloaded:

Best wishes to all,
George
