POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH, U.K.
----------------------------------------------------------
GEOSCIENTIFIC PRIOR INFORMATION, UNCERTAINTY, EXPERT ELICITATION & BIAS
We seek an outstanding person to research and develop novel methods to
elicit and use probabilistic information derived from geoscientific
experts.
The project combines Geoscience, Bayesian Mathematics/Statistics and
Psychology, and demands a mature applicant with excellent inter-personal
skills. The researcher has the unique opportunity to study these
subjects, create new methods to obtain probabilistic information from
(subjective) experts, work with professional programmers to create
internet-based systems to effect their methods, and test these within a
professional environment. This project is sponsored by, and
collaborative with an industrial partner (Total plc), which provides an
international test-bed of practising experts in which to test and
ultimately apply the new methods to improve corporate decision-making.
Areas of focus are the elicitation of Geological information to be
combined with Geophysical data to improve imaging and inversion for
models of the Earth’s subsurface, and increasing the robustness of
estimates of subsurface natural resource reserves. Rapid publication of
the results in top peer-reviewed journals and international
communication at conferences is expected as a matter of course.
This is a fixed-term post until 31st August 2017, based at the
University of Edinburgh with time spent also in Total plc. Start date is
as soon as possible.
