Hi all,
just a small recent amusement item on the knot theme:

But also resonates with what Fiona is referring to, naming, heritage, professionalism, practice, materialism, embodiment, multiple "representations", etc.

Hi Gunnar
Thanks for this- brilliant! I wonder why there would be any argument about knots being hugely influential within design? I can't see any argument there at all - unless we are referring to the version of design that was invented in the 1950's.
As a weaver and dyer, I learnt - literally at first hand- of the importance of knots - tying off, tying together. As well as their functional utility, knots and knotting (am thinking about earlier posts around design and designing- i.e. the noun and the verb) are a medium of embodied knowledge- where one learns about the characteristics and behaviour of materials, environment, force, movement, weight, strength, twist... through the embodied process of actually learning how to tie a knot. The body/ mind can gain worldly insights relevant to all manner of design relevant circumstances, through this process.
Knots can also be interpreted as 'stranded' metaphors - that explain social forces at work, or are a means of learning social values in material form, through the action of making.
List members may know of the work of Professor Tim Ingold and the Department of Anthropology at University of Dundee- where knots have been/are being studied to unravel their various threads of knowledge.
Brings me another opportunity to remind people studying design of our discipline's ancient roots and heritage: it is not a totally new, modernist form of knowledge that was parachuted into existence in the middle of last century.
:-)
Fiona
See ' huff & puff': it's not about knots- but it's a project that documented embodied skills and how they make social ideology - material. www.vimeo.com/27057593
