Web developer (50%) to lead an online experiment in cultural data curation


Position profile

We are looking for an experienced developer well accustomed to big data infrastructures and linked data sets; motivated, ready to work independently and interested in interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and humanities related data. Proficiency in or previous experience with PHP, HTML5, Javascript (including frameworks like jQuery, Ajax-solr), JSON are required. You will be part of the medical humanities<http://www.unifr.ch/mh/fr> team at the University of Fribourg and will work closely with the Center for "Nouvelles technologies et enseignement"<http://nte.unifr.ch/>, a dynamic team of IT specialists and developers. You will be provided with a laptop computer and will benefit from a flexible working schedule.


  *   Six month contract at 50% employment rate (20 hours / week). Contract can be extended

  *   Flexible working hours

  *   State of Fribourg salary grade: 18

  *   Start date: Oct 1st 2014 or to be determined


Mission statement

You will develop a prototype capable of pulling, linking and organising data from existing open online art and humanities cultural heritage repositories. This prototype will "talk" via existing open APIs to repositories like Europeana or the Digital Public Library of America in order to discover and link together digital objects related to the history of medicine and allied sciences (natural history, pharmacy, botany). The aim is to create a dynamic repository of cultural artefacts all related to the field of medical humanities. It will then serve as an exploratory tool for both researchers (historians of sciences, literary specialists taking an interest in medical history) and the general public who will tap into this resource to discover, collect then organise their own sub-collections.

Required computer skills

- scripting languages (PHP, Python)

- Javascript (including frameworks or libraries like jQuery, Ajax-solr), JSON

- experience with data mashups

- accustomed to Github and ready to fork existing projects

- involvement in past or current Digital Humanities projects.


Complementary skills

- accustomed to API design, ideally with Europeana's API  (http://pro.europeana.eu/api)

- experience in working with humanities related meta-data (and knowledge of current meta-data standards)

- iOS and/or Android development is a plus

- visual and web design (HTML5, CSS)

- making visual representations of data (infographics) using tools like D3, node.js.
