Hi Kate,
I have just graduated from the PG Diploma in Library and Information studies at Aberystwyth university.
I studied part time by distance over a period of 4 years and found the structure and pace to be really useful. So far as the content is concerned I don't know how that would compare to elsewhere, but I found the flexibility of the course structure (the deadlines are all self imposed - in fact I had no deadlines throughout but just worked hard whenever I had the chance) and helpfulness of the staff to be the strongest selling points. Although the staff leave you alone to work, as soon as you approach your tutor for help, extensions etc, they will bend over backwards to help and I found them to be really understanding.
The work load is intense and slightly overwhelming, but I think this is due to the level of the course rather than the university. So long as you keep working steadily it soon passes.
The course at Aber is also really expensive but that's the same for PG study anywhere!
I would strongly recommend a course of study at Aberystwyth and enjoyed my time. Distance learning is really tough, but worth it in the end.
Please do contact me directly if you would like to discuss this further or have any more specific questions, I would be happy to help.

Subject: Post-graduate Librarianship Courses
Dear All,
I am looking to start on a post-grad library course in September 2015 so I am spending some time now looking at the various courses available . I will be studying by distance learning which means there are really only three universities to chose from: Aberystwyth, Robert Gordon and Northumbria. They all have similar course programmes and similar module fees, so I wonder if anyone who has recently (in the last 2-3 years) undertaken any of these courses would give me their opinions? Value for money, teaching materials, tutor involvement, work load: any comments would be appreciated before I commit 3 years and a lot of money to a single university.
Many thanks for your help,
Kate Parr
