Dear all,
We are looking for a PhD student in information design, on visualization
and production for complex display systems
at the Department of Science and Technology, division for Media and
Information Technology, Campus Norrköping.
The research focuses mainly on the design of new forms of presentation and
tools for the Dome theatre in Visualization Center C associated with Campus
Norrköping. The position is attached to the project "DomePres - Beyond
PowerPoint - concept development for dome presentations". The dome theatre
invites to an extraordinary experience, and also has great potential as a
visualization tool. Today the dome theatre is primarily used for research
and public screenings of movies and interactive presentations, but there is
also interest from businesses and organizations to use the facility for
presentations and events.
Both the dome theatre and the VR arena in the centre has potential for
entirely new forms of presentation, that go far beyond what is currently
used in society at large. The research challenge is that design principles
and presentation tools for other media are not directly transferable.
Presentations relying on normal presentation formats use only a small
portion of the display surface of the Dome. Therefore, we are seeking a
graduate student to conduct research into how communication can be
designed, using for instance video, text, animation, and 3D, primarily for
a full dome format. To make it possible for companies and design agencies
to design their own presentations using the new forms of presentation,
problems with existing tools will be identified. Concepts for tools to
realize new forms of presentation will be designed and studied. New tools
and workflows for presentations will therefore also be explored. The work
includes collaboration within the University, with different research
groups, and work with design agencies primarily in Norrköping area,
focussing on design and evaluation of presentations, the production
process, and tools.
Design research is therefore required, to explore design principles for
presentations as well as to explore the design of tools and workflows to
enable production using the design principles. This includes research on
the production and design process, as well as instrumental and experiential
qualities. Research in communication through multimedia is thus central,
with a focus on explaining complex problems in engaging presentations. The
forms for the presentation as a whole, such as interaction between
participants, the use of secondary and personal displays, room for
improvisation during presentations, may be relevant. The work thus includes
both research through designing presentations, and through designing
presentation tools. Both case study methodology and experimental
methodology for design research might be used.
The goal is to rely on the unique infrastructure at the Visualization
Center C as a point of departure to:
- Conduct innovative research in information design for complex display
environments
- Create tools and workflows for the production of presentation centre
display system with a primary focus on the dome theatre.
- Conduct research in collaboration with industry in developing tools and
presentations
