The word ‘situation’ brings attention to the designing of interiors as a
practice engaged in spatial and temporal production; a practice that works
in the midst of social, cultural, historical, political forces; a practice
open to contingency, chance and change; a practice engaged with singularity
and specificity. ‘situation’ highlights ideas of event and the eventful
nature of interiors, lived space-time compositions in constant change;
atmospheric compositions as distinct from artefacts; ephemerality;
uniqueness; one-offs; a multiplicity of experience.
As part of the event, SITUATION will bring Omar Sosa, designer and founder
of Spanish-based Apartamento Magazine to Australia for the first time. Sosa
will give a public lecture hosted by RMIT Interior Design at RMIT Design
Hub on the 31st of July. Sosa will be joined by other invited key
situators: Edward Hollis, an architect, writer and deputy head of research
at the Edinburgh College of Art. His books include: ‘The Secret Lives of
Buildings’ and ‘The Memory Palace: A book of lost interiors’; and Bianca
Hester, an artist currently based in Sydney, whose work ‘explores the
various limits that regulate territories, and develops strategies for
addressing the ways spaces are constructed’. Most recently, she was a
participating artist in the 2014 Sydney Biennale – ‘You Imagine What You
Desire’.
The call for papers and creative works has attracted submissions from
around the world – and we look forward to receiving everyone in Melbourne
for 3 days of talking, thinking, debating, drinking, eating and situating.
A provisional list of participants is available on the SITUATION website.
The SITUATION symposium will be composed of clusters seeking to engage with
the performative moment and immanent potentials. The SITUATION Exhibition,
engaging with creative practice as research, presents a range of creative
works from design, architecture and art. All submissions have been blind
peer reviewed. Details regarding those involved as Steering Committee,
symposium conveners/arrangers, exhibition curatorium and peer reviewers are
available on the SITUATION website.
SITUATION is an event initiated and coordinated by the RMIT Interior Design
program.
To register, visit the SITUATION website registration page for link.
Note: early bird registration deadline closes 23 June (Melbourne time)!
