Lecturer in Medical Statistics / Clinical Epidemiology
The post is offered initially for a fixed period of three years
Closes: 16th June 2014
Department of Health Services Research and Policy
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
We are seeking an enthusiastic senior researcher who can manage
large-scale research projects that evaluate the delivery of health care
interventions and who can contribute to our research into quantitative
methods to assess the quality of health care services.
Primary and secondary health services are undergoing major reform
within the UK. There is pressure to provide equitable access to greater
numbers of patients, improve the outcomes of care, whilst also becoming
more efficient. Providing information on all aspects of health care is
seen as the key to supporting services meet these challenges. However,
there is a lack of relevant information to support many areas of care.
In particular, there is a need for better ways, based on sound
epidemiological designs, to describe the performance of health care
providers, both in terms of clinical activity and patient-reported
outcome measures.
The post provides an opportunity for the successful applicant to
develop a major research programme focused on the development and
improvement of quantitative methods for assessing the quality of health
care. This would be achieved by leading or participating in a number of
large-scale epidemiological studies of the quality of care in the UK.
The studies will be focused on surgery but they may extend into other
areas of health care given the multi-disciplinary nature of clinical
care. Each study will present methodological challenges such as: the
risk adjustment of observational data, continuous monitoring of
outcomes, record linkage, and the use of administrative health data. The
successful applicant would have a PhD in statistics or epidemiology (or
a related discipline), experience in the design and analysis of
observational studies, and excellent quantitative skills. Knowledge and
experience of heatlh care quality assessment and clinical audit is
highly desirable.
The post will be based in the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a
collaboration between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
and The Royal College of Surgeons of England. You will be part of a
multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians who play a leading
role both nationally and internationally in shaping and guiding
large-scale evaluations of health care performance.
