Dear Heico,
Thanks for your message
The Matousek translation was '*edited for British readers* by Prof D. D. Johnson of Cambridge University.
This implies the use of the term 'design thinking' in Matousek's book in translation was already in common use in the British design world of engineering design.
Matousek's 1963 translation seems to be the earliest record of the printed use of 'design thinking' in English.
Then is the question, if the 1957 German original translates to 'design thinking', does it count? If it does, how can one be sure, especially if it could also translate to say 'design cognition'. If not, this is an interesting ethical issue. Does it mean that someone writing about the same idea in a different language than English is automatically trumped by someone writing in English using English words??
This extends. . . .if a concept is already expressed, although in a different way, does it have claim to primacy or not? This in turn opens up a completely different can of worms about the precedence of all that prior and often better developed body of work the term 'design thinking ' came to represent.
Interesting. . .
Warm regards,
Terry

Hi, Terry and Carlos,
I have collected the same reference and as Terry already stated it is indeed a translation from German to English. This is not often successful.
On the PDF that I have in my collection it states "Translated from the German by A.H. BURTON and edited for British readers by PROFESSOR D. C. JOHNSON, M.A., M.I. Mech. E., Professor of Mechanics, University of Cambridge.
I am not able to find the original German source. If you have this, I would appreciate if you can contact me off-list.
Yours,
Heico
