medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Colleagues,
Does anyone know of any good analyses/ruminations regarding the relationship between religious confessions and legal confessions? I don't mean that the former would be literally entered into evidence as the latter, but more how did the practice of religious confession shape ideas toward legal confession -- or perhaps vice versa? I'm working on an incident involving a confession of witchcraft (in a civil trial), and would like more insight into the idea of confession across religious and legal contexts.
(I'm cross-posting this to MEDIEV-L and MED-REL)
Thanks,
Lois Leveen
