Join Plum Analytics co-founder Mike Buschman at UKSG to learn more about
alternative metrics. Mike will be doing this session on Tuesday 15 April at
14.00 and Wednesday 16 April at 11.00. The details for the session are
below.
*Title*: Altmetrics in Practice
*Abstract*:
Citation counts have long been the standard measure of academic research
usage and impact. Specifically, published articles in prominent journals
citing other published articles in other prominent journals equate to
prestige and tenure. Metrics can now be harvested and applied to research
around usage, captures, mentions, and social media, in addition to
citations, giving a much more comprehensive and holistic view of impact.
These new metrics are also much more timely than citation metrics and can
keep pace with new formats much faster than the entrenched, legacy
practices. Mike Buschman, co-founder of Plum Analytics, will highlight some
practical ways institutions are using these new metrics today and what the
future holds.
*Bio*:
Mike Buschman is the co-founder of Plum Analytics. Before founding Plum
Analytics Mike was the Director of Product Management for ProQuest's Summon
Discovery Service. Previously Mike was a Client Services Manager for the
IEEE, and prior to that he was Program Manager and Technical Evangelist for
Microsoft's Academic and Book Search products. Mike was also the
Collections Management Librarian at the Microsoft corporate library for
five years. Mike received his MLIS from the University of Washington and
was named one of *Library Journal's* Movers and Shakers in 2005. He
currently lives in Seattle, Washington, USA.
We hope you can attend.
Regards,
Marianne Parkhill
