Dear Don,
Physicist Max Planck was an early adherent of the Stevens theory of scientific progress.
Planck once attended the funeral of a distinguished colleague who made significant contributions to 19th century physics but did not move forward as physics did.
At the end of the service, the coffin was carried from the altar to move past the gathered mourners standing in the pews. As the coffin went by, Planck whispered these words to a physicist standing next to him:
"Thus science makes progress …. One funeral at a time."
As I see it, we all have one foot in the grave. It's difficult to tell which one …
Yours,
Ken

As one of my mentors once said (Prof.S.S. Stevens of Harvard), if you want to have people accept your views, you must live longer than your opponents. He was extremely successful at this for awhile, but then, alas, he too succombed and is now dead.
