I have been studying seining (the method of fishing pilchards in Cornwall
from the early modern era to the late 19thC)and large amounts of "train oil"
were extracted from these when they were salted and packed into hogsheads. I
think when you catch enough fish, however oily or not they may be, you get
some oil.
Was pilchard oil used to light the Cornish mines?
