Dear All,
Those of you who are supervising doctoral students — and those who are interested in issues of referencing and citation — will find a recent article by Michael Lissack especially interesting.
Lissack, Michael. 2013. Subliminal Influence or Plagiarism by Negligence? The Slodderwetenschap of Ignoring the Internet. [Draft under submission to the Journal of Academic Ethics.]
With permission of the author, I have posted this draft to the "teaching documents" section of my Academia page at

Michael Lissack is a former investment banker who is now a researcher and professor in the field of complexity theory. He founded two institutes and one journal for research in complexity, and currently serves as director of ISCE, the Institute for the Study of Coherence and Emergence. He has also done some remarkable work in the philosophy of science and the issue of modes of explanation, as well as creating a fascinating search engine for those who wish to do "deep dive" research in seeking the references and arguments behind their own texts.
I recommend this article for anyone concerned with referencing and citation — especially those who wish others to reference and cite their work while believing that they have no obligation to do so when they believe their ideas to be original even though others have priority in publishing the same ideas.
Best regards,
Ken
