Hi Robert
We do currently deploy web filtering products for all council internet
access. We have used iGear, we are currently using Bluecoat and we are
about to move (any day now) to Smoothwall.
We do make use of user categories to a certain extent in that there are
different permissions for staff and public access. Permissions for
public access are decided in the main by libraries, although that is in
consultation with our networks and information security teams, and we
have ensured that front line staff have the same access as the public,
rather than the general staff access permissions. However, we do not
have different filtering regimes based on age.
The Bluecoat product does allow any member of staff to request/suggest a
re-classification of a given site, which is part of the Bluecoat managed
service. If the request is refused, we have the option of adding the
site to a local allowed sites list that is maintained by our IT support
team. I have yet to see how Smoothwall will operate on this front.
Currently, dealing with blocked site requests probably takes up about an
hour a week of my time at the outside, and we have not had any
suggestions that we do need any age realted filtering.
Regards
Paul

Subject: Public Internet Website Filtering
Dear All,
We are looking again at our public Internet filtering and wonder how
others are managing their filtering systems.
All feedback is welcome. I can summarise for the list and will ensure
responses remain anonymous if requested.
Does your service deploy webfiltering software to public access
machines?
If so, which product?
Who decides filtering policy - Library Service? Other Council dept?
User Categories: do you make use of user categories? eg. child,
teenager, adult?
Where does responsibility lie for managing, blocking/unblocking,
updating filtering policies etc. Is it with Library Staff or IT
support
staff?
If library staff, how much time is spent dealing with filtering
issues?
Does any service not employ public webfiltering?
Any other comments regarding webfiltering?
Regards
Rob
