Hi Jude: Regarding your "not fixed on a goal" and "preferences change...like wine tasting". Not exactly.
For The OTHER Design Thinking what we are looking for are practices that are already engaged in coframing with multiple participants without up-front presumptions.
Not having up-front presumptions is not the same as "not fixed on a goal". Folks working in this space are able to help without preassuming up front that the challenges are one type or another based on a product or service design toolbox. This tends to be useful in the sense that many challenges facing organizations and societies have nothing to do with creating more products and services.
Unlike shopping, the challenges are generated and framed collectively reflecting numerous advocacies rather than any one advocacy.
In this work there is typically a constellation of goals and challenges that are generated by participants.
To state this slightly differently: Shopping implies deciding upon a range that already exists. It is true that Herbert Simon was very interested in convergent thinking theory, deciding theory.
The process that we are looking for examples of typically involves not only the deciding but also the generation of the challenges (divergent thinking theory).
Typically orchestrating multiple stakeholders with multiple advocacies through such a process, whatever it might be called, is an important aspect of this work that we are looking for examples of.
Hope this helps.
