Terry,
There is a distinction between purposeful thought - tying your shoelace, and design thinking - seeking improvement to how shoes are secured on a foot. Purposeful thought is more limited in its possibilities (problem solving) - than design thinking (problem seeking, exploration, analysis, and expressive resolution).
In A Theory of Design Thinking, design thinking uses the same agencies as purposeful thought, but uses them to intentionally improve a focal situation. (Thank you Herb!) There is more to say - description is consistent with purposeful thought, multifaceted definition with the scope and range of design thinking, for example.
Or so I believe,
Chuck
