As long ago as 1997 I approached the Manic Street Preachers' agent to ask permission to use the "Libraries gave us power..." phrase as a strapline for Newham's National Library Month publicity (...expecting to be charged a heavy whack if permission was given...).
In fact the answer I received was that they were touched and delighted that a library had spotted the phrase, and were very happy for us to make whatever use we wanted of the line in exchange for a basic acknowledgement. It adorned our NLM leaflets that year... So (unless anybody knows different) I claim this as the first time the MSPs made a connection with public libraries...

Hi all,
Just thought I'd share this message received by Voices for the Library from the Manic Street Preachers:
http://www.voicesforthelibrary.org.uk/2013/09/message-of-support-from-manic-street-preachers/ <http://www.voicesforthelibrary.org.uk/2013/09/message-of-support-from-manic-street-preachers/>
Nice to know they fully support public libraries!
Thanks,
