For those interested in practical design for sustainability and
environmental design. . .
a themed issue on 'Water Sensitive Urban Design' guest edited by Sam Kayaga

Elements of the urban water cycle greatly influence, and are in turn
influenced by, other urban infrastructure services such as energy, industry,
transport, waste management, health and land-use planning. This link is more
pronounced for cities facing increasing pressures such as climate change,
escalating population growth rates, deterioration of infrastructure systems,
raising environmental standards and changes in residents' priorities.
Increasingly, urban engineers and planners need to adopt water sensitive
urban design (WSUD) in order to cope with these pressures. WSUD may be
defined as 'the integration of urban planning with management, protection
and conservation of the urban water cycle that ensures water management is
sensitive to natural hydrological and ecological processes'.
WSUD requires the integration of
. The management of the three urban water streams of potable water,
wastewater and stormwater
. The scale of urban water management at household, local
neighbourhood and catchment area levels
. The relevant disciplines such as urban design, landscape
architecture and water management
. Structural and non-structural sustainable urban water management
initiatives.
.
Concepts explored include:
* Stormwater treatment techniques and management
* Sustainable water supply options
* Potable water demand management, reclamation and recycling
* Water cycle management and integration
* Managing hydrological impacts on aquatic ecosystems
* Water quality issues
* Institutional, policy and regulatory framework
* Community and stakeholder participation
* Knowledge-based urban development
.
