DRS colleagues,
Following up on Francois' and Keith' comments, allow me to offer anecdotal insights on the issue of designers and value.
In one of my earlier posts I mentioned a study of the Canadian design sector undertaken by Price-Waterhouse. I was part of that study. To this day I can still remember what one businessman said to us in his interview. To paraphrase, "I don't care what you call yourself; all I care about is getting the job done." Results were all that mattered for this person.
Barbara Morgan also provided an insightful perception on career plans when she was interviewed on NPR, the national public radio service in the US. Who is Barbara Morgan? She is a school teacher and a NASA teacher astronaut. She spent 13 days on the international space station. When asked by the interviewer about career advice that she gave to her students, she said "I no longer ask students what they want be; instead I ask them what they want to do." It appears that Morgan places more value on what is achieved rather than what we call ourselves.
