For those interested in basic measurement and metrology the BBC are showing a new series made in conjunction with the National Physical Laboratory and other NMIs about basic measurement. It provides an excellent background for teaching and why we need to measure things properly.
Part 1 is on BBC four at 7pm on Saturday 17 August.(though this may not be what people want to watch on a Saturday night!).
NPL have DVD copies of all three episodes for distribution.
Apologies to non UK readers but this may also be available from local NMIs.
The Measure of all things
The series, presented by Marcus du Sautoy (Simonyi Professor for the Public
Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford), explores humankind's long efforts to add numerical exactness to our world, and the impact of greater precision in measurement on our history, lifestyles and the future.
The series is split in to three one-hour episodes, covering the seven Sl Base Units:
Time and Distance - showing how the ways of recording it have changed
over the last 17,000 years.
Mass and Moles - why is'Le Grand K' losing weight and what will replace it?
Light, Heat and Electricity - the three driving forces of modern science and
Technology
