Hi Teresa
I have worked with OHT`s for the past 8 years.
1. I wrote an internal training programme and part of this is that every element of their role needs to be observed and signed off by a qualified SOHP. It takes about 3-6 months to complete the internal training programme
2. External courses were undertaken for audio/spiro /AEd/CPR/anaphylaxis etc
3. A folder similar to the prep one nurses are obliged to keep were kept by the OHT and audited six monthly
4. Very specific guidelines and protocols are required in respect of the OHT so that they are aware of their parameters. I found that some OHT can try to work out of their remit and this needs monitoring carefully
5 The current OHT I work with has just completed the OHT cert at Leeds Uni and found this very useful
OHT in my opinion are a valuable resource and as long as they are trained and monitored add value.
Debbie

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] OH Technician Training
Hi there. We are currently having difficulties recruiting OH Nurses. We have looked at our skills mix and idenified the need to look at the following options:
-recruitment and training of an OH Technician -nurse recruitment with a view to providing OHN training
Questions:
-if you employ and/or have provided traing for an OH Technician can you share your experiences and advise how you provided the training?
-If you have in the past or are currently providing access to OHN training for a nurse what course have you identified and what feedback can you offer?
Hoping to hear back from anyone who is having similar problems recruiting or has or will be looking at providing training posts for OHNs.
Many thanks.
