medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear colleagues,
I am preparing a session on
Agencies and Nuns’ Liturgies
for Kalamazoo 2014. Please contact me if you are interested in
participating and feel free to pass on the call for papers.
Volker Schier
This proposed session seeks to bring together scholars who want to share
case studies about liturgies, rituals and and music in female monasteries.
It is hoped that these studies help to foster a better understanding of
the
nuns creativity and agency, but also help to document the large diversity
that existed in various orders and monasteries.
Of interest are papers on specific female liturgical uses and adaptions
that occurred for example in the Benedictine, Cistercian, and Dominican
orders. Especially welcome are explorations of the ways in which nuns
sought to create their own liturgical niches that could be filled and
expanded without the interference of male confessors and superiors.
Explorations of music performed by nuns "after hours" in more private and
individual contexts is also of interest.
