The Department of Music seeks to appoint a part-time (0.5 FTE) Teaching
Fellow in Music. This fixed term post is tenable for four years. Based in
the Department of Music, you will either already possess a doctorate in
Music or be in the final stages of completion. You will already have some
relevant teaching experience.
You will have a particular interest in some aspect of early music
(pre-1800) and will contribute to our teaching programmes, principally at
undergraduate level and, if appropriate, at Masters level, including units
in technical skills (particularly pastiche composition) and historical
studies. You will assist with other aspects of the running of the
Department of Music and with the delivery of its academic programmes.
Rated the top university Music department in the UK in the annual *Guardian
*league table for the past three years, the department is among the most
prestigious in the U.K. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise
(RAE2008) rated 85% of our research as ‘internationally excellent’ or
‘world class’. The department maintains a strong traditional undergraduate
teaching profile, offering technical coverage that most departments can no
longer sustain, attracting top-class students. But research and teaching
interests extend well beyond the western art music tradition, and include
screen media, non-western musics and popular music. Musicological research
strengths currently focus on the early middle ages and the long
20thcentury, including musics of France, the British Empire, Soviet
Russia,
Nazi Germany and anglophone vernacular traditions including hip-hop culture.
In addition to its distinctive research and teaching profile, the
department is the focal point of music-making at the highest level for
students from across the entire University, who participate in its many
choirs, orchestras and other performing groups. The result is a lively,
supportive and creative atmosphere in which staff and students continually
inspire each other to perform to their highest potential.
The Department has wide subject coverage but is particularly strong in the
areas of composition and historical musicology. The post is a 4 year
fixed-term appointment and is available from 1 September 2013. The
anticipated date for interviews is 5 July 2013.
