Hi Soha
We use the BD sample collection using Blood 7 mL K2EDTA Plus BD Trace metal tube for collection of blood samples for all our trace metals.
Any contamination from the needle is minimised by using EDTA as the EDTA collection tube is down in the collection order as we don't want EDTA to contaminate the iron, calcium etc in our lith hep samples etc.
We used to measure plasma manganese and found this to be a problem when BD stopped using glass and moved to plastic tubes - we changed to blood manganese where levels are much higher and contamination is minimised.

Subject: Manganese levels
Dear all
I had a query from one of our TPN dietician mentioning that they see patients with high blood manganese level even if they have just been started on TPN. She told me that she had made some enquires with other nutrition groups in the country asking about the routine checks of Mn and levels observed. Some mentioned that they suspect that there is contamination from needles used to take the sample, hence they do not trust result and they do not monitor Mn levels!
I would be keen to listen to your point of views and practice at your end and if you are aware of any studies that confirm this contamination suspected.
