Hi Joanna,
We've asses data management plans both for the Rural Economy and Land Use programme, and for the ESRC.
I wrote a blog post about this at: http://researchdataessex.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/evaluating-data-management-plans/
We also wrote the guidance for peer reviewers for ESRC for reviewing DMPs. Happy to discuss more about this if you want.
I similarly wrote guidance for MRC for reviewing DMPs (largely aimed at population health sciences, so reasonably applicable to social sciences). This is available at: http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Utilities/Documentrecord/index.htm?d=MRC008768
Assessment via a DMP seems the best for such module.
Regards, Veerle

Subject: Re: Assessment for MSc RDM module
Dear Joanna,
For your M. Sc. module in Research Data Management, you might be interested in using our simple Data Management Planning tool with your students - http<http://www.mdi.org/dmp>://www.mdi.org/dmp<http://www.mdi.org/dmp> - described at http://datamanagementplanning.wordpress.com/2012/03/07/twenty-questions-for-research-data-management/. Sophie Kershaw used it with some satisfaction for our Oxford Doctoral Training Centre students last term - see her final report at http://www.opensciencetraining.com/content.php. She said in an e-mail:
"The DMP tool was a fantastic help, both for me and for the students - having a ready-made form available really helped to structure the discussion of DMPs and made teaching the subject much more straightforward than it would otherwise have been! I wanted to include it in the official OSTI release as well over the coming weeks, as it's an invaluable tool for educators in delivering the right level of questions/discussion whilst also being easy to integrate into an existing course."
Hope this is a help. Kind regards,
David

Dear all
We’re running our first MSc optional module in RDM here at Sussex this summer as part of our ESRC Doctoral Training Centre’s MSc in Social Research Methods. The course is credit bearing and so will need to be assessed. (The usual assessment for these modules is a paper of 1000-1500 words.)
As most of our DTC MScs are planning to go on to doctoral research, a logical form of assessment would be the development of a data management plan for their PhD.
Does anyone have experience of assessing RDM modules or data management plans that they would be willing to share?
Many thanks
Joanna
