medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you all for preventing me of making this blunder with my Latin
students - I understood there was some doubt of ascribing the 'Salutatio'
to Francis, but had no idea how dubious it was!
And no, Grosseteste does not give the prayer or mention Francis, but
merely referes to the prayer as "salutatio beatae virginis". I created the
problem by assuming that Hail Mary would not have this name since I
noticed that there seems to be a similarly titled prayer from Francis -
and therefore it seemed odd to me that Hail Mary would not be referred to
as 'Salutatio Angelica' or with it's first words 'Ave Maria' or some such.
But of course there was no such problem for Grosseteste, and this prayer
seems to be referred to with several different 'names'.
