Dear
I am one of the lurkers who read the discussions on this list with interest. For what it is worth, I don't find it a problem to have contributors be aggressive- we can all take what they have to say with a grain of salt. As the Associate Dean for Research I try to prepare doctoral students to face any type of audience they may encounter when they present papers, both at conferences and through submissions to journals. And I have seen some very aggressive audience members. The list culture, even if at times a little uncomfortable, is a safe place to exercise presenting ideas- that some people don't agree is not a problem. That they disagree aggressively: this is only a problem if your response is to be sidelined. I encourage you to own your opinions, reflect on the sage and not so sage advice from the 'experts" and see these encounters as a valuable critical thinking exercise and a wonderful drafting opportunity for your ideas.
Deirdre
